MOST mothers of the bride could be forgiven for shedding a few tears on their daughter’s wedding day.
But for Sally Stanzel, the occasion looks set to be even more emotionally charged than usual.
For it’s a day the 50-year-old mother of four from Upton in Poole, thought she would never live to see.
Ten years ago Sally had her second kidney transplant after the first organ donation was rejected.
“This year is such a milestone for me as my last kidney was rejected after nine and a half years. Although this one wasn’t a perfect match it is still going strong,” says Sally.
“I know this is going to be a day I probably wouldn’t have lived to see if it hadn’t been for my donor. I have written to the donor’s family to let them know just how much I appreciate it.”
Sally nearly lost her life 20 years ago when she became unwell with kidney disease and was in a critical condition by the time she was diagnosed.
After a few years on dialysis she was fortunate enough to have a kidney transplant.
“I was lucky because there are people who have to wait much longer. I used to have to drive as far as Yeovil sometimes because the dialysis facilities were not always available locally.”
But when Sally stared to feel unwell again a few years later, doctors thought her body was starting to reject the donated kidney.
She was sent for a scan which revealed she was actually six months pregnant. Six weeks later she gave birth to her son who weighed just 2lbs.
“Thanks to my organ donors I have lived to give birth to my son who is now 16 and be around for my three grandchildren too. Words cannot express just how grateful I am,” says Sally.
“Many people don’t realise how important it is to sign up as an organ donor. You can be a live donor too.
“I know it’s a big ask but you only need one kidney.”
Now Sally who has been married for 32 years, says she can’t wait to celebrate her daughter’s wedding which will be held at Upton House on Saturday June 15.
“It is going to be a big family affair with eight bridesmaids, a page boy and flower girl. Everything has been locally sourced from Upton – apart from the horse and cart.”
But the proud mum says she will be taking plenty of tissues too.
“I doubt I will stay dry eyed for long!,” she adds.
