ANGRY parents fighting for a phased transition to a new school uniform have been dismayed to discover the school is sticking to its guns.
Oakdale South Road Middle School in Poole told parents they must replace their children’s uniforms entirely by September, when the school becomes Oakdale Junior School.
But many rejected the move, branding it an unnecessary expense and a waste of good clothes which still fits their children. Some had even stocked up on the old uniform in a recent sale having been told at meetings with the previous head they could continue to wear it during the transition.
More than 120 parents at the 550-pupil school have joined a Facebook group against the plans, and many have even threatened to boycott the new uniform, in whole or in part.
But despite their strong feelings the school has now sent a letter home advising parents that there will be no phased transition.
The letter, signed by chairman of governors David Mann, states that the governing body reviewed its decision but continues: “on balance, we concluded that to introduce the uniform as originally planned remains the best option in the interests of the children.”
The letter insists that the school “clearly understood” concerns about cost and had carried out a wide-ranging consultation.
It admits however that one in six of the respondents indicated they would like to keep the old uniform, and one in eight disliked all six new options.
It adds: “I now ask all parents and carers to support the school, teaching staff and governors to assist us all – with your children – to make this as smooth and successful period of change.”
Adele Oliver-House, who will have two sons at the school from September, said: “They’ve offered no compromise – absolutely nothing.
“They have overlooked everything everyone has said.”
Several members of the Facebook group commented they would buy none or just part of the new uniform, with one stating: “I shall be sending my son in the current uniform as it fits him and I just cannot afford to buy a whole new uniform just for one year.”
Another added: “We are so disappointed with the way this whole thing has been handled from start to finish.”
