THIS July’s Sky Ride is part of Bournemouth’s transformation into a “centre for cycling”, a councillor has said.
The event, which takes place on July 20, will see an expected 4,000 cyclists taking to the streets as roads are closed to cars.
Cllr Michael Filer, Bournemouth Council’s cabinet member for transport, said the aim is to get families on two wheels for summers to come.
“We are really keen to get local people on their bikes,” he said.
“We received a substantial grant from government about a year ago to help stop the increase in car traffic, and we have recently produced a map which shows our existing cycle routes and planned routes over the next five years. We would urge people to take to cycling, walking and bus travel rather than hopping in their cars.”
The Sky Ride will feature both day- and night-time rides, and the streets of the town will turn into a racing track after dark.
Cyclists of all ages and abilities will be invited to take part in the family event during daylight hours.
Cllr Filer said the council’s views on cycling are “second to none”.
“There is no reason why it should not be safe for children to cycle to school, and for adults to bike to work,” he said.
“We are doing everything we can to promote cycling. This is not a spur of the moment initiative for us – it is something we have been working towards for years. I would absolutely encourage people to get on their bikes for the Sky Ride.”
The event will this year feature the first-ever nightglow procession through the Lower Gardens to Gervis Place, Exeter Road, Bath Hill and Pier Approach.
Awards will be presented to the best dressed participants, those with the most unique and interesting bikes and the best lit cycles.
