Quick-thinking rangers from the National Trust put out a fire on the heath at Studland this afternoon with the help of onlookers.
Two members of staff were made aware of the aware of an unattended camp fire at Bramble Bush Bay and worked to put the fire out, with help from some families who were nearby on the beach.
Beach-goers used buckets filled with seawater to help put out the flames, after making a call to Dorset Fire and Rescue Service at around 1.05pm.
A spokesperson for the National Trust said they would like to remind visitors that it is illegal to camp on a National Trust site, and that barbecues should only be lit in the designated areas provided.
Dorset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a fire engine and landrover attended the scene of the fire, which had been put out before they arrived, with the cause believed to be deliberate.
Fire officers then remained on the heathland to dampen down the area.
