VICTIMS of violence are being urged to report rape, sexual assaults and domestic violence after new statistics showed an increase in conviction rates.
Kate Brown, chief crown prosecutor for CPS Wessex, revealed that the number of successful outcomes for prosecutions had risen from 70 per cent in 20011/2012 to 73 per cent in 2012/2013.
She said: “The report also shows that 66 per cent of defendants pleaded guilty to these crimes, compared to 61 per cent the previous year.
“This means fewer victims had to attend court and give evidence.
“Violence against women and girls are cruel and destructive crimes and the Crime Prosecution Service will prosecute these cases when there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest.”
In Dorset there were 970 prosecutions for acts of violence against women and girls in 2011/2012 and 3,221 in Hampshire, compared with 956 prosecutions in Dorset in 2012/2013 and 2,607 in Hampshire.
