VOLUNTEERS are needed to help the Marine Conservation Society clean Dorset’s beaches.

This year’s Beachwatch Big Weekend, the UK’s biggest beach clean and litter survey, has been set for September 20 to 23, when thousands of volunteers will take to the coast to clean up and record the rubbish they find.

In 2012, nearly 3,500 volunteers cleaned almost 240 beaches, covering a total of 90 kilometres. 181,978 items of litter were collected filling over 1,800 bags. For every kilometre surveyed almost 2,007 pieces of litter were found.

Some of the country’s best loved marine wildlife is under threat from litter which they accidentally eat or become tangled in.

MCS Beachwatch officer Lauren Davis said “We’d like to see much more involvement around the UK coastline. We’re especially on the look out for people who can help us organise a beach clean in the area, and anyone can simply volunteer to take part.”
