THE seal of approval was given to the major overhaul of a popular wheel and skatepark when it was officially opened with a successful skatejam.

Christchurch leisure centre Two Riversmeet's event marked its official opening after a month's closure for refurbishment in which a new concrete base and a variety of stainless steel ramps and rails were installed.

The aim was to provide a site to cater for all wheeled sports including skates, BMX bikes, scooters and rollerblades and they were all put to the test during the opening day celebrations.

Work went on to complete it right up until Friday night to make the outdoor Wheels Parks ready for its Saturday competitive SkateJam.

Youngsters were so keen to try it out they were out practising early in the morning before the event took off.

“Obviously with a new skatepark everyone wants to come round and take a look and see what they have done with it,” said Christchurch play ranger Sonia Mendonca.

She said last year's event attracted around 50 competitors and 150-200 spectators and they were sure they would outdo that.

With competitions for scooter riders, skateboarders, inline skaters and BMX bikes, over 16s and under 16s there was plenty of opportunity for contestants to show off their wheely skills.

With a DJ, free food and drink and demonstrations from Maverick Slackline and a BMX rider, there was a lot more to enjoy.

“It was a great day,” said senior play ranger Sofia Hutchinson, adding they were grateful to the local community and businesses who helped with the event and supplied prizes for the competitions.
