MOST jobs have their ups and downs – but none more so than this one.
Poole Bridge and the Twin Sails Bridge are in need of a new operator, and it will need to be someone who can stay calm when things go wrong.
The £21.6million Twin Sails bridge has been dogged by technical difficulties since its grand opening in April 2012, with repeated breakdowns that have caused traffic chaos in the surrounding area.
Earlier this year, it was revealed to have a long list of claimed defects but these are systematically being dealt with by contractors and now the Borough of Poole is looking to recruit a new operator to control both bridges.
The 34 hour a week permanent job carries a salary of £19,621 to £21,519, pro-rata. It will be based at the council’s Quayside office, close to the Twin Sails Bridge.
The bridges operate between 5am and midnight, 365 days a year, so shift and weekend working are an essential part of the job.
The job advert on the council’s website states: “This is a responsible position with significant lone working requirements.
“The successful applicant will be one of a team responsible for the safe and efficient operation of both Poole Bridge and Twin Sails Bridge and the associated waterways, road and pedestrian networks.
“The ability to remain calm under pressure and make balanced judgements and decisions is critical.
“Professional and adaptable with a positive approach to work, you will have commitment to delivering a high quality service and strong customer focus.”
