OFFICIALS have confirmed a spate of anti-social behaviour was reported at Upton Country Park before a bird hide was torched.
The Daily Echo understands handmade signs warning dog owners to clean up after their pets – and others urging cyclists to slow down or face the consequences – had been posted around the area.
Park workers were shocked after the popular wooden hide, adorned with wildlife pictures drawn by Ham-worthy school-children, was burnt to the ground in the early hours of Sunday, July 7.
Firefighters confirmed the cause was deliberate and police have launched a criminal investigation.
However, Dorset Police have insisted there is nothing to suggest a connection between the blaze and any of the other reported incidents at the park.
Borough of Poole cabinet portfolio holder for public engagement and participation, Cllr Judy Butt, explained: “We are incredibly saddened by the destruction of a much-loved and well-used facility at Upton Country Park and we are doing all we can to help police in their investigation.
“On a separate note, we can confirm there have been a number of minor incidents of anti-social behaviour where hand-made signs about dog mess and cyclists have been posted around the shoreline areas of the park.
“We are working closely with the police who have also increased their presence at the park in recent weeks.”
Cllr Butt stressed the importance of park users reporting suspicious activity immediately to park staff, who will log the incidents.
