Benedict Cumberbatch has officiated a same sex wedding.

The 'Star Trek Into Darkness' star married one of his closest male friends and his partner in a civil partnership in Ibiza on Saturday night (20.07.13) and although he was nervous because it was the first time he carried out the duty he was honoured to do it for his pal.

He is quoted by The Sun newspaper as saying: "It's a very private, lovely thing to be asked to do. Of course I'm going to make a joke after it if it goes well - 'I do weddings.' Next will be children's parties and bat mitzvahs. It was mainly Jewish and gay audience."

Among the guests in attendance was writer-and-journalist Julie Burchill, who described the ceremony as a great occasion and a "blast".

She said: "The hotel was lush, the bridegrooms were beautiful, and the man who married them (to each other) was Benedict Cumberbatch -- so yes, it was quite a blast."

Benedict flew into Ibiza on Friday (19.07.13), which was his 37th birthday, and the same day he discovered he'd been nominated for an Emmy for his performance in 'Parade's End', and the actor admitted two things just added to the special weekend.

Speaking about his nomination, the 'Sherlock' star said: "My friend doesn't even know this. I've been so busy trying to get luggage from one airport to another, I haven't even gotten around to telling him. I managed to tell my mum and dad, who are over the moon."
