A NEW befriending scheme has been launched in Christchurch to help people in crisis.

The Christchurch Angels has been set-up by Christchurch Community Partnership to help residents who need short-term help in times of crisis or illness.

Launched at Christchurch Baptist Church earlier this month, the project caters for people of all ages, whether it’s a young mum in need of support or an older person.

It is funded by Dorset Community Foundation, Sovereign Housing and the NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group.

The voluntary befriending service for residents is now looking for “Angels” to sign up and help people.

Rev Sandra Prudom, chair of Christchurch Community Partnership said: “The aim of the project is to support people in the Christchurch area who don't have a network of family or friends to give that practical help and support in times of crisis or illness.

“It is the community helping the community and both recipient and donor benefit from the experience.”

Project leader Linda Green spoke to people at a special event about the possibility of becoming an angel.

Now, following the event, it is likely a pilot scheme will begin in September, matching Angels with people in need of some support.

Christchurch Community Partnership celebrated its 10th anniversary with the event at the Baptist Church, also launching a Christchurch Volunteer of the Year Award.

This aims to raise the profile of volunteering in Christchurch and to recognise the contribution to the community that is made by all volunteers.

Entry forms are available at christchurchcommunitypartnership.org.uk/events.

CCP has also recently been awarded the Investing in Volunteers Award.
