CHRISTCHURCH is in the running for some prestigious awards after a visit from judges.

Representatives from the South & South East England in Bloom Awards left impressed after their annual visit to the town amid the sunny weather.

Judges Ken Turner and Kelvin Mason were shown around the borough by Ann Simon, Christchurch council’s tourism manager, and Clive Sinden, open spaces and countryside manager.

Mr Turner, said: “We’ve had a very enjoyable day – it’s great to see the town looking so good in the nice warm sunny weather with residents and visitors enjoying themselves.

“It’s obvious that Christchurch is a well-respected and looked-after town and we were impressed by the number of volunteers involved in the different organisations.”

Transport was provided by the Captains Club Hotel as the group visited Mudeford Quay, Steamer Point Nature Reserve, Highcliffe Castle, the Juniper Centre Allotments at the Fire Station, Christchurch Quay, New Zealand Gardens and Druitt Gardens.

They visited Stanpit Marsh Nature Reserve and met members of the Friends of Christchurch Station, who have entered the ‘In Your Neighbourhood’ category of the awards.

Ann Simon said: “It’s very noticeable that many people are involved in keeping Christchurch looking as good as it does and we’re very grateful for the work that so many members of the community do.

“I think everyone here can be justifiably proud of the borough and how it looks.”

Christchurch is a regular winner at the awards, gaining a silver gilt and overall winner prize in the small coastal town category last year.

Stanpit Marsh won gold and overall winner in the conservation area category and Christchurch Quay won gold in the small park category.

This year’s winners will be announced in September.
