Every day that I am free from the commitment of going to school, I go to work.
I work early, I work late - like the most of you – however, I never really get a day off to be “Amber” and rest, unless I am ill (When I’m ill, I’m not Amber, I am some gremlin that lives in the loft of my humble abode, only venturing down the stairs to secure an icy drink and copious amounts of paracetamol.) and at the present moment in time, I am totally shocked to see that it has been suggested that MPs receive a 11% pay rise… SAY WHAT?
I understand with the cost of living increasing and our wages remaining the same that a pay rise would be necessary… But would it be necessary to those who are earning £64,000 P/A?
Personally, I think not.
Yes, ‘they’ must be accustomed to living a certain lifestyle– but the suggestion of a pay rise that large is just crazy, I know that I wouldn’t get a pay rise if I wasn’t doing my job correctly, so why should the MPs?
Most people in local constituencies don’t even know who their MP is, or for that matter, what they actually do, which is relatively shocking considering the important role politics plays in the day to day lives of people, obviously unwittingly.
Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health and MP for his local constituency of South West Surrey, would be one of the MPs inline for a pay rise, yet this girl does not think he is eligible, because of the recent wave of news stories about the high hospital mortality rates in our NHS hospitals.
There are endless reports of patients being left to die in corridors, premature children not being cared for in sufficient ways and shortages of staff. Which leaves the nation solemnly wondering why this is happening and why nothing is being done other than the various attempts to hide the truth from the vigilant public eye.
If you want to earn more money, you’ve got to work for it, it doesn’t just fall out of a tree straight into your bank account. I must regrettably inform you, my dear MPs, secretaries of state and alumni alike… practice what you preach.
I’ve got a suggestion for what the extra pocket money could be used for: to fund the hunt for the cure for cancer. Allegedly, we’re etching closer and closer to it, and perhaps Mr Hunt’s raise would be better suited for that?
Perhaps it could be used to train the staff of ‘111’?
Pay for more nurses and hospital staff?
I mean, he is the Secretary of State for Health… right?
Those who know how to utilise their MP to the best of their ability are those who are party members in their hometowns. Their peers and pals, making politics seem like an exclusive game that ‘the others’ can only join in when there’s a need for press coverage to make them seem GREAT.
Yes, some might argue that there are MPs out there who genuinely do work hard and deserve a pay rise; I do, but 11% of their already hefty wage? Hmm… No.
But don’t worry folks, it has been cited that Nick Clegg won’t accept a 11% pay rise… but then again, isn’t Clegg the one with the dirty table?
Oh yeah, he is…because he broke his Pledge.
