MULTI-award winning music extravaganza Camp Bestival saw an eclectic mix of music from The Levellers, Richard Hawley and Mark Owen wow the crowds at Lulworth Castle.

The family-friendly festival came to a close yesterday with sets from Labrinth, DJ Fresh and eighties favourites Heaven 17.

Around 30,000 revellers of all ages packed into the site for the top event, which ran from Thursday, August 1 to Sunday, August 4. The festival had a record-breaking third day as thousands of music lovers took part in a Guinness World Record attempt to launch the most paper planes simultaneously. Protest music legend and proud resident of Dorset, Billy Bragg returned to Camp Bestival to bring a little bit of social conscience to the stage.

Organiser and DJ Rob da Bank said: “Billy Bragg was incredible. It was a very emotional set.”

The psychedelic festival spectacular also saw Northern Irish rock group, Ash, and cult band, I Am Kloot, take to the main stage for the opening night.

Camp Bestival is the offshoot to the Isle of Wight’s 24-hour monster, Bestival, and caters primarily for families with activities including a dinosaur petting zoo, Brit School and circus workshops.

Anna Campbell, five, said: “This is my very first festival and I hope we come back again next year.”

The festival offers a diverse mix of live music, comedy, literary talks, theatre and children’s entertainment.

Notorious former drug smuggler Howard Marks performed his hilarious spoken word show ‘Scholar, Smuggler, Prisoner, Scribe’ to a packed audience in the Guardian Literary Institute.

The Camp Bestival stalwart said: “My fondest memory is of the first Camp Bestival when I was unexpectedly asked to read fairy stories to the children as no amplified music was allowed for an hour.”
