FLY-TIPPERS are finding other places to dump their rubbish after a nearby recycling centre was closed to deter them.
Christchurch councillor Margaret Phipps has slammed the “crazy” and “irresponsible” actions of those who left a sofa and a freezer on the side of the Avon Causeway just days after the ‘bring-banks’ recycling centre was closed nearby in Hurn.
“At the end of the day no matter where they dump it, it’s still illegal,” she said.
“We don’t want irresponsible people dumping rubbish in our parish and we don’t want it anywhere.”
The ‘bring-banks’ recycling centre was described as an eye sore after people used it to drop off other items that should not have been left there.
These included washing machines, mattresses, builder’s rubble and tyres that were illegally dumped there.
Trees were planted to screen the site but the fly-tipping continued and the CCTV equipment installed by Christchurch Borough Council was stolen.
By closing the site the council and Dorset Waste Partnership were hoping people would use the Christchurch tip at Waverley Road instead, or residents of other boroughs would use their approved site.
But then the newly dumped items were left close to the turning for Burton.
Cllr Phipps added: “If they are taking the trouble to take it out and dump it then why can’t they take the trouble to take it to the tip?
“We just want people to be responsible and take their items to the proper place.
“Every area has their own place to use. It’s crazy and I wish people would please take their rubbish to the tip.”
