ONE of Europe's largest outdoor events, the Great Dorset Steam Fair, will be marking its 45th anniversary with a Guinness World Record Attempt.

The world-renowned National Heritage Show will be attempting to completely flatten the world record for the greatest number of steam rollers in a parade formation over a set course.

Organisers are hoping to bring together 110 steam rollers on August 31 as part of the 2013 Roller Special, on a brand new stretch of road created at the event.

They are aiming to smash the existing record set exactly 10 years ago to the date, when 32 vintage steam rollers passed over a length of new road at the Great Dorset Steam Fair. One of the independent witnesses will be Colin Tyson of Old Glory Magazine, a well respected figure in the steam industry.

Great Dorset Steam Fair managing director Martin Oliver said: “We are attempting this on our busiest day because it will be a breathtaking sight to offer our paying visitors. If you are planning to come along on the Saturday, listen for the announcements because you won’t want to miss this.

“We are hoping to treble our last attempt and to have this many steam rollers in one place is completely unique. I don’t think this will ever be done again.”

A unique range of steam, petrol and diesel rollers from the leading manufacturers throughout the history of road rolling will be taking part in the attempt. The Great Dorset Steam Fair will take place from Wednesday August 28 to Sunday September 1 in Tarrant Hinton. More than 200,000 enthusiasts are expected to flock to the 600 acres showground for the five day event.

All vehicles participating in this world record attempt must be moving, not just parked in a row.
