BROWNSEA Island will soon be home to a new festival to celebrate the history of scouting thanks to one inspirational guide leader from Bournemouth.

Amanda Shorey, 25, has been awarded £2,500 of funding by O2 Think Big for her idea to engage a new generation by showcasing elements of the traditional movement with a modern twist.

The Mudeford section leader will be working with Brownsea Island Youth Service Team to organise an event in summer 2014 on the Island.

She said: “I personally feel that it’s really important for people in the local area to realise the rich heritage of scouting on Brownsea Island as it started here with Baden-Powell.

“I really want to open their eyes to what the organisation does, but give the whole movement a more modern edge.

“It gives strangers the chance to work together and become friends. It opens your eyes to the bigger picture and lets you make your own personal mark on your community.”

Around 150 youngsters will be staying on Brownsea Island and taking part in variety of activities, including kayaking and orienteering.

Stages with live music and an outdoor cinema will also form a major part of the festival to give it a more modern feel.

The idea was initially supported by a £300 Think Big grant and in recognition of the great potential this showed, Amanda was selected by O2 to receive a Think Bigger Award of £2,500.
