A GROUP of over 50s has been moving into work and volunteering after completing a course run by injured military veterans.
A total of 10 unemployed people joined the Active Plus six-week course in Bournemouth and used it as a springboard to progress into new opportunities.
And Linda Garland, from Christchurch, said she gained “so much more” than finding work.
“Yes I got a job but I also got myself back to who I used to be,” she said.
“I was getting a bit down with not being able to get a job and this has given me so much.
“It’s about finding yourself and what you want to do.”
Active Plus has been funded by job centres.
Army veterans use activity sessions to boost confidence in problem solving and making action plans.
Dave Roberts, volunteer instructor, was injured in the Falklands War.
He said: “It’s very gratifying to be able to help.
“We can empathise and know that life can be tough.”
And Christina Prater, HR manager at Home Appliance Guard, helped with advice on looking for work and interviews.
“We find this age group reliable and great as role models for our younger staff so you need that balance between more mature workers and younger people.”
Course director Brian Tregunna gave a presentation at Springbourne Fire Station before councillor Rod Cooper, the mayor of Bournemouth, handed out certificates.
Brian said: “We’ve definitely seen a transformation in this group.
“They have got advantages and we look at the potential they’ve got.”
The next Active Plus programme in Bournemouth is on Thursdays from October 17 to November 21 and it will run again in February next year.
