This month, the most important event that happened is we received our Make your Mark ballot papers. Each of us has received 800 ballot papers and Poole has received 4,000!
This means for the next few months we will be working exceptionally hard to get as many ballot papers filled in and completed as possible.
This is a vital piece of work- the most voted topics will go on to determine what is to be debated in the House of Commons during Parliament week in November.
Last year, the previous MYP Jack Matthews got 2,666 ballot papers completed and we hope to mirror his success!
Also this month, we attended the regional meeting in Tolpuddle, Dorset, where we learnt about the amazing work of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, who were deported to Australia after they formed a secret alliance in their trade union.
The Tolpuddle martyrs really helped to shape the way our world looks now- without them the UK may be a very different place.
Firstly, we met with all the other MYPs and deputies from around the South West, and had a guided tour of Tolpuddle.
We got to see where they met, formed their secret oath and the grave of the only remaining martyr (the others all immigrated to Canada).
We then had an interesting and lively presentation from the town crier in the old court house, where the Tolpuddle Martyrs were themselves tried in Dorchester.
We learnt a lot of new information about a seemingly little known topic- I certainly have never learnt about them before and it happened right on my doorstep.
The highlight of the afternoon was a visit from Dorset’s Police and Crime Commissioner, who discussed his work and his goals for his time in office.
I didn’t know much about the role and importance of the PCC, but I learnt a vast amount about the extensive reforms to the policing system.
After his presentation, we had an open debate, where many strong opinions were voiced, particularly surrounding the Curriculum for Life campaign that the Police and Crime commissioner has pledged to sign.
We are also progressing on our other campaigns in Poole. We have booked the venue for the stress workshop so the next priority is to now recruit teachers in conjunction with CAHMS.
We have also established our twitter page that is now in full use. Also, we have sent in the report for the Arts priority to help that to progress, so we should hopefully make a lot of changes and charge ahead with our priorities, which we will keep you informed about!
