“I just plug in, play my stuff, see the crowd and boom! That's what I always do. I never have an itinerary.”
If you want your Friday night to go with the boom then Halo Bournemouth tonight is the place to be. The DJ behind this quote is Coyu - fresh from Ibiza, hailing from Barcelona, full of sexy Spanish summer vibes.
“Sexy Summery Spanish bouncy house could be a good description of what I do but I would also add intense... My sets are very intense even when I play deep house.”
He is one of two headliners at Back2house tonight, a new monthly dance extravaganza run by AJ Events, part of a new wave of more cultured clubbing events at Halo under new manager Gary Bennetton. Massive names have been signed for the next few months so watch this space...
Coyu has had a successful summer playing Ibiza - he is at Pacha fortnightly and has warmed up for Steve Lawler, John Digweed, and other island legends.
“I've played Space, Amnesia, Sankeys, Privilege, but never in Pacha before,” he said. “It's definitely one of the best clubs in the world and my best summer season in Ibiza.”
Coyu - aka Ivan Ramos Salinas - will soon be topping the bill out there himself. He has also run his own record label in Barcelona, Suara, for five years. Tonight, he’ll be playing his latest release Vertigo, which hit the Beatport's Tech House Top 100 - the ultimate clubbing chart - only three days after it was released.
Coyu’s been wrestling with a cold this week but surely dance music will be the best medicine? He says he “can’t wait” to enjoy his first night out in Bournemouth so let’s show him a warm welcome, whatever the weather.
I asked Coyu for secret plan or two from his set but he's staying mysterious… “I don't know what is gonna happen,” he said. “I have to arrive to the club, see what the crowd wants and make them move.”
Tim Green, one of London’s most exciting electronic dance music DJs and producers, awarded Best Breakthrough Producer award at DJ Mag’s Best of British awards in 2010, is the second headliner at Halo tonight. He’ll be playing and promoting the first track from his new label Disc Over Music - entitled Just People, it’s a sure-fire dancefloor filler with a techno edge, quirky strings and lots of energy. Like Coyu, he wants to run his own label so he can promote more ambitious productions and “a sound foundation for forward-thinking music”.
The night runs 10pm til 5am, giving ample time for Bournemouth’s best local DJs to get in on the action. AJ Events head Uncle D opens the night with a funky house set; Adrian Killiszek brings a fresh look at electronic house to the line-up; and Dave Hornby, who has filled dancefloors in Bournemouth with his Shake brand for four years, brings a wealth of experience and an army of fans to complete the line-up.
- Back2house featuring Coyu and Tim Green, tonight, Halo Bournemouth. £8 advance from Halo or Richmond Classics; £10 on the door.
