IT’S a fitting tribute to the Bournemouth clubbing super brand Slinky that their final event has sold out.

Slinky Classics The Send Off will be happening at the O2 Academy Bournemouth tomorrow night.

DJs include The Tidy Boys, Scott Bond and Lee Haslam plus many more.

Back in the mid 90s, when in the wake of anti-rave legislation effectively banned outdoor dance parties, the superclub held sway.

And, right there at the forefront, was Bournemouth’s very own Slinky which debuted in May 1997 at the Opera House – now the O2 Academy Bournemouth – and prompted the influential Muzik magazine to describe the town as ‘Britain’s new clubbing capital’.

Within six months the BIC hosted its first all-nighter as the world’s most influential DJs, including Sasha, Judge Jules and Brandon Block, queued up to play.

However, the writing was on the wall for Slinky when new licencing laws came into effect in November 2005 that allowed pubs and bars to open 24 hours a day, meaning revellers looking for a late night drink didn’t have to shell out to go into a club.

A resurgent live music scene also loosened the grip of electronic dance music on the charts and radio playlists as young fans took up guitars instead of honing their mixing skills on a pair of turntables.

With the dance music scene gaining resurgence this summer, it seems a shame that Bournemouth’s most iconic clubbing brand is finally over.
