RACHEL Chadwick’s debut 60 Postcards is an inspirational book and comes with our recommendation for an uplifting read.
The book tells the heartfelt story of how a young girl’s project to scatter 60 postcards in memory of her mother helped her to come to terms with her loss.
Rachel’s world had been torn apart when in February 2012 she lost her mother to cancer just 16 days after the first diagnosis. Surrounded by poignant reminders and memories Rachel decided to create a project to celebrate her mum’s forthcoming 60th birthday in December.
She also resolved to find a way to spread the word about the wonderful mother she had lost. Inspired with a sudden idea she resolved that she would leave notes around a city in her mum’s memory – then decided that postcards would do a better job – and so, full of expectation and drive, she set about hand writing sixty.
Each one would carry her email address with a message asking the finder of the card to write back. Her mum knew how much Rachel had wanted to visit Paris and her last gift had been Eurostar vouchers.
And so it had been decided for her really, this is where Rachel would go, accompanied by friends, and this is where the postcards would be scattered. The question is would any be picked up and read and would there be any replies.
There is a buzz in town about this book and we are gearing ourselves up at Gullivers for the launch which will take place here on March 6 at 6.30pm. Rachel Chadwick is an English Language Graduate from Cardiff University. She was born in Wimborne Minster, and now lives in London.
