Dorset is a county bursting with creative, eco-friendly businesses and a growing numbers of brides are looking for a ‘green’ wedding.
Of course it stands to reason that Dorset has so many ethical businesses.
Traders are inspired by the scenery around them – the beach, the New Forest and beyond.
Some, such as Gold&Black Beeswax Candles, based in Swanage, will appeal to the eco bride on the big day and beyond. They sell 100 percent beeswax candles with a subtle yet sweet honey smell, perfect for reception tables. After all, do you want guests at a green wedding breathing in paraffin from cheap candles? Of course not!
It’s also very important to buy local, supporting Dorset business and reducing transport pollution.
“We’ve been florists for 20 years and we’ve seen a rise in eco-friendly brides asking for UK-grown flowers,” said Sarah Eastwood from Gold&Black. “Our candles are handmade in the UK and completely natural, down to the cotton wick.
You can even be green with your engagement, wedding and eternity rings.
Upcycling and recycling are very ‘eco’ and The Perfect Ring Company in Bournemouth can help you transform and re-wear a family heirloom. “We are finding that more and more clients are approaching us wishing to reuse family heirlooms,” said company owner Ryan Power.
“Just last month we took some diamonds from a client’s grandmother’s earrings and re-set them into her wedding ring. She felt as if her Gran was then with her, watching her get married.”
Lush, who are based in Poole, run bath-bomb making hen nights in their shops, using only the finest local ingredients, including seaweed fresh from the harbour. Their soaps are popular wedding favours.
Jules Florist, from Christchurch, offer bespoke bridal bouquets and table decorations offering flowers grown locally and seasonally.
Tomorrow, Bride: the (Eco) Wedding Fayre will showcase the above suppliers and many more besides.
It’s held at the Green House hotel in Bournemouth (“The Greenest Hotel in the UK”) and is a great opportunity for brides-to-be to get to grips with seasonal eco style all in one place.
The Green House hotel prides itself on being environmentally friendly.
For weddings, it is available for exclusive use and this year is working closely with firms to bring the beauty of the beach indoors.
