Because it is Mothering Sunday tomorrow, I have chosen some books that would make an ideal gift for Mum’s who like to take a day trip to the capital.
The first is Teatime: A Taste of London’s Best Afternoon Teas by Jean Cazals, hardback, £25. Illustrated by world-renowned food photographer Jean Cazals, Teatime features 50 of London’s unique tearooms, capturing the ambience of world famous venues such as The Ritz and The Savoy, those that offer a modern twist on traditional afternoon tea such as The Primrose Bakery and The Berkeley, the more down-to-earth like La Fromagerie and Daylesford Organic, and the totally indulgent, such as Melt and Cocomaya.
TeaTime also includes more than 30 mouth-watering recipes from a selection of London’s best afternoon teas made by the chefs from grand and boutique hotels as well as chic bars and cafés.
My second choice is Tea & Cake London, paperback, £9.99. Featuring more than 70 cafés, bakeries and tearooms, each illustrated with a photograph, this handy guide is an ideal reference for a trip to the capital and includes suggestions for traditional afternoon tea, casual cafés, vegan delights and an oddball tearoom with a twist.
I would also recommend The Traditional Shops and Restaurants of London, paperback, £9.99. This guide provides descriptions, directions, and phone numbers of more than 75 businesses including home furnishing stores, clothiers, perfumers, umbrella shops, cheesemongers, and gourmet shops as well as more than 40 places to eat and drink and the top historic street markets for food, antiques, bric-a-brac and vintage clothes.
