A VEGAN from Bournemouth was “horrified” after finding a dead cockroach inside a loaf of Kingsmill bread.
Samuel Backon, of Pine Road, Winton, made the gruesome discovery on Thursday while making himself a hummus sandwich. The 18-year-old said: “I was going out with friends and was putting together a packed-lunch.
“As I took out the piece of bread I noticed a black bit. At first I just thought it was a bit of mould or something. Then I picked at it and realised it was a cockroach. It was disgusting.”
Mr Backon, who hopes to study adult nursing at Bournemouth University in September, said the insect was approximately the size of a 50 pence coin.
The teenager bought the loaf from his local Costcutter store on Ripon Road. He said: “I took some pictures on my phone. Then I took it back to Costcutter to get a new one.
“They were really good and exchanged it straight away.”
He said he has made a complaint to Kingsmill but is yet to hear back from the firm.
A spokesman from Allied Bakeries, the parent company of Kingsmill, said investigations into Mr Backon’s complaint are ongoing.
