TAFFY Richardson has stressed Wimborne's players will be "absolutely devastated" after learning the Football Association are "pulling out all the stops" to stage the FA Vase final at the new Wembley.

Magpies bowed out of the competition at the quarter-final stage, losing 2-1 at Totton after extra time on Saturday.

And Richardson, a key member of the Magpies team that won the Vase at the old Wembley in 1992, said: "I feel for every player in the Wimborne team.

"I don't know how they played against Totton, but I was as devastated as everyone else in Dorset football when I heard they had lost.

"If it was me, learning that the FA want the final to be played at Wembley, I would be absolutely devastated, and I'm sure that's how everyone connected with Wimborne feels now."

Richardson, a fireman who now plays part time for Poole Town, added: "I told the people at work I thought Wimborne would beat Totton 2-0.

"My children wanted them to get through as well, so we are all terribly disappointed.

"Along with Tommy Killick, I get quite cheesed off when people always quote how good the 1992 team was.

"But to be honest, we probably weren't as good a team as Wimborne are now. It's just that we were mentally strong and when the chips were down, we always seemed to produce something extra special.

"The players now are always reminded about the 1992 team and have that extra pressure put on them which other clubs, like Totton, probably don't have to deal with.

"I'm sure Wimborne's team were good enough to have got to Wembley and I hope they can bounce back from this defeat."

Richardson's comments come after FA spokesman Mark Whittle confirmed the Vase final was being considered for the new £798 million super stadium in May.

Whittle added: "A lot of positive discussions with various parties have taken place.

"We have to cover all our bases, but I can say we are planning for lots of different scenarios and many include holding the Vase and Trophy finals at Wembley.

"We're not setting ourselves any deadlines, but we will probably know a lot in three weeks' time."

Wimborne manager Paul Arnold said: "It makes it doubly worse they are hoping to get the final at Wembley."

Totton, who had lost twice to Wimborne in the league this season, have been against Billingham Synthonia in the two-legged semi-final.

The other last-four tie sees Curzon Ashton face Truro City.
