AFTER a string of Hollywood blockbusters - Robocop, Basic Instinct, Starship Troopers, em, Showgirls - director Paul Verhoeven returns to his native Holland for this acclaimed war story.
Based on real events, Carice Van Houten stars as Rachel Stein, a pretty Jewish woman who falls for a high-ranking Gestapo officer (Sebastian Koch) towards the end of the Second World War.
When her hideout is destroyed by an Allied bomb and her escaping family gunned down by German soldiers, Rachel turns to the local Resistance to help her gain revenge. On her first mission she is questioned by Muntze (Koch), who ends up employing her as his assistant.
So begins a forbidden love affair that can only end in tragedy - but not before events reveal some uncomfortable truths about life under the Occupation.
