ALTHOUGH it's hard to make a case for Idlewild changing your life, once you've fallen for their fervent endeavours you can't help but will them to succeed. Which is why the fiddly, folky frills of their previous outing, Warnings/Promises, came as something of a disappointment.

Make Another World is much more like the Idlewild of old - stirring songs glued together by rampant guitars, tendon-tight melodies and iron horse drums as Roddy Woomble's lyrics pick at the human condition. Lead single No Emotion is hampered by its nagging '80s rock-disco stylings, but the gutsy Everything and the wry In Competition For The Worst Time are bang on the money. Once In Your Life is a meat n' tatties rocker, easily surpassed by the beat blitkrieg of If It Takes You Home.
