HUNDREDS of shoppers queuing to get into the newest Marks & Spencer store in Bournemouth were greeted with a glass of champagne.
The Simply Food store in Westbourne was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony carried out by manager Ray Taylor, section manager Katy Walker and colleague Maureen Fletcher.
The 7,800sq ft shop has taken over the premises previously occupied by Waitrose supermarket, which angered many residents by moving to the former Morrisons branch in Upper Parkstone last year.
A petition called for the Westbourne site to remain a food store, and the news of another high quality retailer moving in was warmly welcomed.
Mike Smith, president of Westbourne Traders' Association, said: "We think it's fantastic.
"It's bringing back some life to Westbourne.
"It's going to bring a lot more volume of traffic than Waitrose and attract people from outside the area.
"Waitrose is really a posh people's corner shop, but this has broader appeal. Everyone is really excited."
Shopper Katie Smith, 85, from Parkstone, said: "I'll be shopping here," while Sheila O'Brien, of Canford Cliffs, said: "I think it's lovely."
Winifred Baines, also of Canford Cliffs, visited the new store as part of her 83rd birthday celebrations.
"We've been waiting for this since last Christmas because it's been so quiet here.
"I used to come to Waitrose.
"Now this will be my local."
Wendy Walker, 56, of Westbourne, said: "It's brilliant.
"It has some good priced food and nice friendly staff.
"I will do most of my main food shopping here."
Mr Taylor, who is managing the store in the opening period, said: "If you talk to the local community, everyone's so pleased to have us here.
"It's a big investment and we are going to be here longer term."
The new store not only stocks food and drink, but also a range of clothing essentials, flowers, kitchen accessories, cards and gift wrap.
