WITH multi-platinum sales of their debut, Employment, in the bank some expected Kaiser Chiefs to knock out another set of the same and retire. But this is a much less obvious set than Employment.
The big choruses, baggy stomp and Stephen Street production are all in place, as are the wry lyrics about what they saw on the streets of Leeds last night, but there's greater depth and breadth, a heavier tone. Ruby takes a few listens to worm its way into your affections; while Angry Mob almost passes you by until it whacks you with a massive hook and pithy lyrical observation right at the end. Everything Is Average Nowadays echoes Blur's Modern Life Is Rubbish, Boxing Champ hints at Madness and My Kind Of Guy boasts almost Costello-ian levels of bitterness.
