ONE of the finest art deco hotels in the country is being restored to its former glory.
A £2.5 million refurbishment of the Hotel Cumberland on Bournemouth's East Overcliff is already under way, transforming what was once considered Europe's leading Jewish hotel into the art deco gem it was designed to be.
Well-known hoteliers Terry Taylor and Brian Shone first bought the hotel 25 years ago but sold it on after just eight months.
When the opportunity arose to buy it back last year they decided the time was right to realise their dream.
"The Cumberland has always been a very special hotel with Eartha Kitt and Des O'Connor among its distinguished guest list," said Mr Shone.
The Cumberland boasts the largest outdoor swimming pool in Bournemouth. Resident director Ken Wood said: "We want the hotel to be a place where people can enjoy chic and sophisticated surroundings, excellent service and top quality food."
To mark the completion of the upgrade, a launch is planned on June 21. "We intend to invite a big star as our guest of honour," said Mr Shone.
"In the meantime we would be delighted to hear from any guests who stayed at the hotel during its glory days. They must have some fascinating stories to tell."
