CHILDREN were given an unexpected holiday yesterday when part of their school building collapsed.
Pupils at Kings Park Primary School, in Ashley Road, Boscombe, were sent home in the afternoon and told they could not return until next Monday.
A large chunk of brick cladding fell from the exterior of the main building on Sunday, causing damage to the tarmac playground.
The area was cordoned off by school staff when it was discovered on Monday morning.
Surveyors have now been called in to assess whether any other pillars are in a dangerous condition.
One parent, whose nine-year-old girl attends the school, said: "It's come as a bit of a shock. It's going to cause problems for parents who suddenly have to look after their child when they didn't expect it."
Bournemouth Borough Council says the closure is necessary to comply with health and safety regulations while further checks are carried out.
Jane Portman, executive director of children and family services at the council, said: "The safety of our children is of utmost importance, and so to ensure this, and following professional advice, we have had to take these measures. We will continue to keep parents informed about the situation and when the school will be able to reopen."
