The Undertones, The Old Fire Station, Bournemouth
As a general rule pop bands that reform without their original lead singer tend to be something of an anti-climax but in the case of The Undertones it's a triumphant success. Just ask the sell-out crowd at The Old Fire Station who were treated to 30 songs and 80 minutes of superb music by Derry's finest recently.
Frontman Paul McLoone, who replaced original lead singer Feargal Sharkey when the band reformed in 1999, creates a compelling stage presence and delivered all the songs with tremendous passion and energy. With original band members Damian O'Neill (lead guitar), John O'Neill (rhythm guitar), Mickey Bradley (bass) and Billy Doherty (drums) delivering an excellent tight sound throughout the evening, all the old favourites such as My Perfect Cousin, Jimmy Jimmy, Here Comes The Summer and the much celebrated Teenage Kicks had the crowd yelling for more.
It's impossible to watch The Undertones in concert without smiling such is the effect of their refreshingly uplifting and infectious songs. They were as convincing, energetic and entertaining as when they first played in Bournemouth over 25 years ago.
