A police spokesman said the road was closed for around an hour and a half while firefighters extinguished the vehicle and oil was cleared from the road.
The road re-opened at around 4pm.
A spokesman from Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said the incident caused “traffic chaos” and the vehicle was destroyed by the blaze.
