Wheels Festival's 'Super Saturday' has lived up to expectations, with crowds eclipsing those that flocked to town on opening day.

Day two of the festival attracted thousands of petrol heads, with much of the East Overcliff Drive demonstration straight packed solid five or six deep.

The historic rally cars and the powerful touring car championship machines proved particular favourites with spectators.

Indeed, current World Touring Car Championship racer Tom Chilton - who had been driving his 750bhp Nissan GT-R35 along the demo straight - caught up with the Daily Echo before his afternoon run.

Tom said: "Obviously, I like sniffing exhaust pipes, and I've been in motorsport since I was 13 years old - professionally since I was 18.

"I have a lot of experience in motorsport and, for me, coming along to days like this is great. It is great to be able to give something back to the public."

Speaking from the festival's super car show, at Pier Approach, Tom said: "I think it is wonderful everyone can get close to these cars.

"There are a lot of very nice cars in here, we've got a couple of Ferrari F40s. I mean, they're £750,000 each and there's two of them here.

"All the cars in this room must come to a fair few million pounds, but what their owners probably don't realise is that my Nissan would beat them all around a racetrack."

Meanwhile, festival director Jon Weaver confirmed the event's second day had been a busy one.

"Super Saturday has lived up to its name and delivered a packed programme of demo's and displays," he said.

"We've welcomed back the historic F1 cars to the demo straight and look forward to seeing them again tomorrow.

"The brand new Two Brothers Motorcycle Stunt Team have also given us thrills in the pop-up arenas and they'll be back for Sunday too, along with all of the festival favourites, including monster trucks and freestyle BMX riders along the beach.

"We would encourage visitors to make the most of the last day by checking out the pre-war and vintage cars in the square and watching the action at the BXUK Championships next to Boscombe Pier."

Among the vintage cars was a Bentley Mk XI Special, four-and-a-half litre straight six, which was restored after being found in a Carolina scrapyard.

Also the 1934 Chrysler Plymouth Coupe Convertible, on display at Bournemouth Square, proved a popular exhibit. The Plymouth was imported to Charminster in 1938, and is currently up for sale with a price tag in the region of £50,000.

Other attractions packing them in today included a new display of motorcycle tricks and trials on the beach from the Xtreme Stunt Team.

Thanks to recent beach replenishment works, the monster trucks were also able to race side-by-side for the second day running.

And, once again, stunt driver Paul Swift showed off his precision skills on the demonstration straight with a Italian Job-style chase sequence.

The festival site is open from 10am to 7.30pm today.
