THOUSANDS of people enjoyed a nostalgic flypast, terrier racing, bird of prey displays and classic cars at a charity event.

The 23rd annual Verwood Rotary Rustic Fayre in Potterne Park was attended by around 4,000 people including around 500 supporters and volunteers, 250 classic cars and their owners and 200 car boot sellers.

In addition families could watch a flypast by two Spitfires which drew in the crowds, as well as stalls, live music, food and drink and a fun corporate-sponsored duck race. The aim was to raise as much money for the Rotary Club of Verwood's chosen causes.

Vern Harris, chairman of the rotary club, said: "It's the second year that we have had a flypast, with the first one happening in 2013.

"The effect on the crowd was brilliant. The whole event came to a stop and the queues for the food, burgers and ice cream broke up as everybody looked at the spitfires. It was tremendous."

He said that there were scores of stalls for children and adults to take a look around, as well as music in the beer tent from the folk band, Celtic Knot, and four-piece group, Vanessa's Villains. Alternatively, people could also listen to music from the Ukulele band, The Flamin' Ukes.

"In the arena, we had reptiles and eagles from the Eagle Heights team including the Crystal Palace mascot, Kayla.

"We also had the local youth football team and Taekwondo club, as well as terrier racing which was a bit wild but lots of fun and circus skills from Circus Whiz, which allowed kids to try juggling and tightrope walking."

Asked how the event went, Vern said: "It was the perfect day in terms of the weather, which really does make a big difference.

"We are so grateful to all the members of the public who helped with the event in so many ways."
