ORGANISERS of this year's Rotary Dorset Bike Ride are aiming to top the 2015 turnout of around 650 cyclists.

The popular annual ride, in aid of Cancer Research UK, takes place on a range of Purbeck routes, from ten to 108-miles.

More than 200 riders are already signed up to the event, which starts at Longthorns campsite, near Wareham, on September 18.

It is organised by the Rotary Club of Wareham with support from neighbouring rotary clubs and sponsors Bloor Homes and Cyclexperience.

David King, from the Rotary Club of Wareham, said: "The ride has grown massively in popularity over the past few years, enabling us to increase the amount of money we raise for Cancer Research UK, and we hope this year’s ride will be bigger and more successful than ever.

"The ride is a wonderful event for cyclists of all ages and abilities, from families looking for a leisurely ride in the country to budding Chris Froomes wanting to take on a challenge.

"The routes feature quiet country lanes running through the stunning scenery of the Jurassic Coast, and our team of volunteer marshals will be out cheering the riders on to the finish.

"The support we receive from local businesses is a major part of the event’s success, and we are grateful to Bloor Homes, Cyclexperience and our other sponsors, whose generous contributions ensure that we can maximise the amount of money raised for charity."

Since the Rotary Club of Wareham took over the running of the event five years ago, the ride has raised more than £100,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Bloor Homes, which is building the Westgate development in Wareham, has provided £1,000 to cover the cost of signage and flyers, as well as food and drink for the riders.

Bloor Homes Southern regional sales director Kim Willcock said: "We’re delighted to be sponsoring the Rotary Dorset Bike Ride for the second year running.

"It is a fantastic event for a good cause, and we hope all the riders have an enjoyable day and raise lots of money."

Riders who raise more than £400 in sponsorship will be entered in to a prize draw to win a bike and cycle vouchers donated by Cyclexperience of Wareham.
