FOR the first time ever, Ballard School in New Milton is inviting people from across Hampshire and beyond to explore its unique 112 year history.

On Saturday September 10 tours will be run through the main building in line with Heritage Open Days, England’s biggest festival celebrating the nation’s history and culture.

Ballard School is situated on the edge of the New Forest National Park on land bought by the Ubsdell family in the early 1900s.

Today the impressive main building retains its L shape and has many Arts and Craft movement inspired features, many still in their original condition and setting. These can be found in the main reception, chapel, junior library, Headmaster’s study, school offices and some classrooms.

Highlighted within the dedicated ‘Heritage Room’ there will also be a display of plaques and photographs charting the building’s evolution from a country estate into a modern and thriving independent school.

Visitors can take guided tours at 9.30am, 10.15am, 11am and 11.45 am. Journeying through the rooms they will be shown many period features including ornate fireplaces still with their original decorative tile surrounds.

All the tours will be led by enthusiastic staff and volunteers who have a particular interest in the school and the local history.

Alastair Reid, Headmaster of Ballard School, said: “We look forward to welcoming many visitors into the school. Drawing attention to hidden gems across the country, everyone will be given the chance to explore Ballard’s unique history, layout, and style.”
