TWO bursary funds worth up to £1,500 which support disadvantaged young people to access further education are open for applications.

Dorset Community Foundation is encouraging those aged 16 to 21 from Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Wimborne and the surrounding areas to apply for the Superior STEM Bursary Fund, established by engineering company, Superior.

It is open to anyone within the specific age group who is looking to undertake a science, technology, engineering or mathematics course at either Bournemouth and Poole or Brockenhurst College, who can apply for grants of up to £1,500.

The charity also offers up to £1,000 through its own bursary scheme for young people across Dorset. Those on traineeships affiliated with the four local colleges can also apply for support towards their travel costs, equipment or special clothing.

Tracey Melling, chief executive of Dorset Community Foundation, said: "Both the Superior STEM Bursary Fund and the DCF Bursary Scheme assist young people who are particularly disadvantaged.

"The Foundation established the DCF Bursary Scheme thanks to a legacy gift from a local retired teacher, Marjorie Gordon, who was passionate about education.

"Over 50 students, like Charles, 16, have already received support. He comes from a single parent household and cares for his mum and his sister who are both registered disabled. The bursary paid for travel to college, enabling him to pursue his dream of becoming a sports teacher."

Dorset Community Foundation has distributed over £10 million in support to hundreds of local groups across the county over the last 16 years. Thousands of Dorset residents facing exclusion and disadvantage have received help though the generosity of local people, companies and trusts the charity works with. The Foundation’s local expertise enables donations and legacies to reach though to where they are needed most.

The deadline for applications to both bursary funds is September 30 at noon. For more information, go to Dorsetcommunityfoundation.org or call the charity on 01202 670815.
