STAFF at some local Tesco stores may have to move off the night shift or work at a different branch in order to keep their jobs.

The supermarket plans to end night-time shelf-stacking at 149 branches and have the work done in the daytime.

It is believed some local branches are likely to be among those affected.

Staff will be spoken to about the possibility of working in the daytime or being redeployed to other branches.

Tesco is also reducing the opening hours at 30 stores which currently open 24 hours a day, but no local stores are thought to be on the list.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We’re making some changes in a number of our stores to help us run them more simply and deliver the best possible service for customers.

“We understand this may be disruptive for some of our colleagues and where there have been changes to a colleague’s role we will be working really hard to ensure they are fully supported.”
