THE Poole lifeboat was launched yesterday after a yacht ran aground in Poole Harbour, just south of Green Island.

RNLI lifeboat volunteers were tasked by Solent Coastguard to the 26-ft yacht just before midday.

A spokesman for the RNLI explained: "The vessel with four people onboard was fast aground. A tow was attempted, but as it was a twin keel vessel, the keels were acting like an anchor, holding it fast.

"So the crew laid out the yacht's anchor and dug it into the mud to make the vessel secure.

"When the tide turned they then took the crew back to their yacht club."

The yacht got into difficulties at South Deep, off Cleaval Point, Poole Harbour.

As high water was due at 9pm, it was hoped the vessel would refloat then, or the following high tide on Friday morning.

The RNLI spokesman said: "The Poole lifeboat returned back to station after refuelling and it was ready for service by 2pm."
