A NORTH Dorset road is closed this evening after a car fire.

Higher Street in Okeford Fitzpaine is shut both ways as a result of the blaze and a fuel spillage.

The incident is near The Cross.

The fire has now been extinguished and police are awaiting recovery of the vehicle before the road reopens.

A spokesperson from the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The car was well alight.

"A crew from Sturminster Newton used two sets of breathing apparatus and a hose.

"Police attended for public safety and traffic control."

Calls were made to the emergency services at 7.10pm.
