FOUR men from Dorset are hoping it will be second time lucky when their return to the Robot Wars arena airs tomorrow.

Tim Rackley, 24, who lives in Parkstone, led spinner robot Concussion to the Grand Final back in March alongside teammates Nick Oliver, Carl Yeo and Sam Griffin.

The quartet, who all work for Blandford-based engineering company Amfax, were making their first appearance on the popular cult TV show, and believe they were far more streetwise upon their return to the purpose-built fighting arena in Glasgow.

Team captain and weapons driver Tim said: “We do a lot of design in our day-to-day work, but this was so different, approaching design for a battle. It was a very steep learning curve when we got there the first time.

“It was crazy and something I always wanted to do as a kid, so to get to do it again was pretty awesome.

“Now that we’re friends with quite a lot of people there, we were less star-struck and more part of the crowd. It was a great sense of community this time.

“Since the last series, Rory from team Nuts, who is also in our episode, he’s now working at Amfax with us.

“We invited him in to show our boss what he could do and he’s now actually selling one of the company’s main products.

“We enjoyed it just as much as the first time, but in a different way which was nice.”

The Dorset quartet have made a number of changes to Concussion since their debut on the show in March, changes which Tim believes could make all the difference.

Since appearing on Robot Wars a number of team Concussion’s members have earned promotions at work, and Tim believes the show has benefits that stretch beyond the realms of sheer enjoyment.

He said: “I think it’s shown that it’s not just sleepy Dorset. A lot of people think of Dorset as just an agricultural or farming county and they don’t count it on the map for engineering.

“The customers we have are always asking and talking about it, so from an engineering career perspective it’s a massive thing to have on your list.”

Tim added: “There’s not too much trash talk, it’s more like playful banter.

“We’ll have to wait and see how he does.”
