A PAIR of Bournemouth film-makers are making their first multi-million pound movie, with Bond star Eva Green and Oscar-winner Kathy Bates signed as stars.
The film, A Patriot, is a Brexit-inspired science fiction thriller which will also star Ed Skrein, who plays Ajax in the Marvel hit Deadpool.
It is a major step up for the creators of the cult hit K-Shop, a Sweeney Todd-inspired horror movie shot in Bournemouth.
Writer-director Dan Pringle and producer Adam Merrifield run White Lantern Film, based near Bournemouth’s Triangle.
Their first feature K-Shop – a scathing take on Britain’s binge drinking culture – was mainly shot around an empty shop unit at Gervis Place.
A Patriot will have a budget of 10milion dollars – around £7.25m.
It is set in a nightmarish version of Britain in 2050.
Eva Green plays a border cop, patrolling the 15ft high wall which has been built along the coast to keep out refugees and separate the country from the post-apocalyptic world beyond.
Dan Pringle said: “The rise of populist politics, the polarisation of modern economics and the looming threat of environmental collapse; these subjects dominate our intrigue yet despite this, mainstream cinema has become largely devoid of probing cinema willing to explore this uncertainty that permeates our daily lives.
“A Patriot, in all its fierce allegory, is my offering to the void. A film to function as both thrilling escapism and a catalyst for debate in equal measure.”
He said the film-makers had found an “actress of exceptional craft and range to light up the role of Kate”.
French actress Eva Green made her film debut in The Dreamers, played Vesper Lynd in the Bond film Casino Royale and has also appeared in Kingdom of Heaven,Dark Shadows, 300 and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. She won a Golden Globe award for her role in the TV series Penny Dreadful.
Kathy Bates won an Oscar for her performance in the Stephen King adaptation Misery and has also been in Titanic, Fried Green Tomatoes, Dolores Clairborne and Midnight in Paris.
British actor and rapper Ed Skrein has appeared in Game of Thrones and The Transporter Refuelled, as well as playing Ajax in Deadpool.
Mr Pringle and Mr Merrifield are to travel to the Cannes Film Festival in May to raise interest in the movie.
Other cast members are due to be announced in May and the shooting will begin in September.
The film’s cinematographer will be Eric Kress, who shot the original Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and the remake of Flatliners.
Dan Pringle has written the screenplay with Toby Rushton, who worked on The Sweeney, Monsters and Welcome to the Punch.
