A DOCTOR from Poole Hospital has been awarded for the ‘outstanding care’ shown to a child with a rare form of cancer at the hospital’s annual awards evening.

Dr Martin Hussey, a paediatric associate specialist, was presented with the trust’s ‘living our values’ award at the event on Thursday at AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium.

Dr Hussey was nominated after he treated a patient who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2015. The nomination was made by her grandmother who said that Dr Hussey “consistently treated her and us with outstanding care, support, patience and understanding".

“The trust he inspires is amazing", she said, and he “deserves a gold medal for his patient care”. She added her granddaughter “always has a smile on her face during her consultations.”

Recently retired senior sister Sylvia Lowrey won the employee of the year award for the hospital’s endoscopy service, with the team named winners of the Friends and Family Test award in recognition of a 100 per cent approval rating from patients.

“This is a fantastic award that I am grateful to accept on behalf of the fantastic endoscopy team I have had the pleasure of working with,” said Sylvia.

“I’m delighted that the team also won the Friends and Family Test category – what a great vote of confidence in the service they provide.”

There were a total of 12 awards presented during the evening that recognised team and individual excellence in patient care, innovation and improvement and staff that go the extra mile.

A local running club, Poole Runners, won the Fundraiser of The Year Award after raising almost £44,000 to improve the hospital’s cancer services. The club has chosen the Poole Hospital Charity as its charity partner for the Poole Festival of Running for the last 36 years.

Chairman Steve Erskine thanked all the staff, supporters, patients, relatives and members of the public who had taken the time to make a nomination.

“A big thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate an individual or a team and also thanks to the judging panel for their careful deliberation over the many nominations that were received,” he said

“The dedication and teamwork of all our staff, fundraisers and volunteers has been fabulous and many regularly go above and beyond the call of duty for our patients, visitors and colleagues.”
