AN Olympic marathon runner officially opened a primary school’s new running track.
Burton Primary School installed the mile-long facility in its playing field to help pupils complete their ‘Daily Mile’ challenge. Thousands of schools across the country have been taking part in the scheme, which encourages schoolchildren to take part in a 15-minute run each day.
Burton Primary’s PE coordinator came up with the idea to install the running track, and the school’s parent association helped raise funds for it.
Double Olympian and Poole resident Liz Yelling was invited to open the track yesterday after introducing herself to pupils at an assembly.
Emma Billson, PA to the head teacher, said the new track was met with great enthusiasm from the pupils.
“All of our children are running or walking a mile a day, and it helps with their learning and concentration. It’s easier now the track is in place as it is weather proof.”
“It’s down to the teachers to fit the daily mile into the school day. It helps the children get rid of some energy and concentrate for class. The teachers take part too,” she added.
