John Peel Tribute Night, Mr Kyps, Lower Parkstone

The crowd that turned out at the John Peel tribute gig on Thursday night perhaps best typifies the legend's broad and extensive appeal to music lovers from all walks.

Coming through the doors at Mr Kyps was anything from teenagers, who'd no doubt sacked off their maths homework to be there, to folk who looked like they might have wandered in on their way back from picking up their pension. Peel would have been touched.

Bournemouth based six-piece, Sancho, kicked off proceedings with their avant-garde take on indie-pop - delivered through stunning vocals and supplemented by electrifying violin playing.

The Hats' set was a laid-back, semi-acoustic affair, delivered through a soft rap on a bed of double bass and occasional trumpet and trombone.

If headliners Acoustic Ladyland were a drink then they'd be a flaming sambuca. They used a mixture of frenetic keyboarding, awe-inspiring sax playing, pulsating bass and faultless drumming to produce a phenomenal jazz-electro set. This four-piece delivered a blinding set and helped round off an evening of stunning music.
