A SWANAGE beach has won another top national quality award - for also being a place to go when it is cold.

Swanage Central beach was granted the Quality Coast Award in conjunction with Keep Britain Tidy, for its recreational facilities as well as its sheltered bay, where visitors can seek protection from the bracing winds.

The sloping sands and attractive landscaped gardens plus the pier were also taken in to consideration, making it an "ideal place for gentle exercise and a winter stroll".

Other factors, which have made the beach unique, is nearby Durlston Country Park, the steam train, which visits Corfe Castle and its cafes and restaurants.

It is the second such award for the beach, having scooped the summer equivalent in celebration of its clean waters and water sports.

To qualify, beaches must be clean from litter and dog fouling, be in good physical condition and provide excellent facilities.

Alison Holmes, Tourist Information Centre manager at Swanage, said: "It makes us proud to receive a Quality Coast award in both the summer and winter.

"It really is a major achievement.

"I am sure the awards will help us to attract even more tourists to the beach, which is a great boost to the local economy."
