A NEW initiative to cut the number of animal deaths on New Forest roads has been launched.
At the end of September, the number of cattle, ponies, sheep, donkeys and pigs killed or injured in collisions on the area's roads was 73 - 26 fewer than at the same time last year.
However, October began badly with 12 collisions in the first two weeks. Since then another four have been reported, taking the total to 89.
Now, in collaboration with the Verderers, Forestry Commission and police, the New Forest National Park Authority has brought out a handy, credit card-sized list of emergency contacts and advice.
It points out: "It's the law: Report all acccidents involving a pony, cow, donkey, dog, pig or sheep to the police as soon as possible, and within 24 hours."
Contact police on 999 in an emergency or 0845 045 4545 in the case of a non-emergency relating to all road accidents with animals.
To report a sick animal, contact the Verderers on 023 8028 2052 between 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday, or the Forestry Commission on 023 8028 3141 (24 hours).
It also reminds drivers: l Even if an animal runs off after a collision it may have serious injuries; l Forest animals have no road sense but have the right of way; l Drive slowly especially at night and give animals a wide berth; l If you feed animals they may stay near the road and be killed.
National Park head of visitor services Nigel Matthews said: It is important that people report all animal accidents as soon as possible.
"We hope that people will keep the card in their wallets or cars so that numbers are always at hand."
The card has been sent out with NPA's Park Life publication. It is available from the HQ at South Efford House, Efford, Lymington, and will soon be in other outlets in the forest.
