WE felt a bit like The Famous Five setting off for Cornwall with our puppy for her first holiday.
The girls were in search of adventure, the pup was enjoying a seemingly relentless picnic and my wife and I were just hoping the sat nav would get us there before nightfall.
We had been invited to stay at the multi-award winning Landal Gwel an Mor – billed as Cornwall’s Five Star coastal destination.
Meaning ‘view of the sea’ in Cornish, Landal Gwel an Mor is situated in the harbour and beach town of Portreath on the North coast of Cornwall and offers guests the choice of 114 fully equipped lodges along with onsite dining and leisure facilities.
Founded in 2006, the resort partnered with the well-established European holiday company Landal GreenParks in February 2018, rebranding as Landal Gwel an Mor and the park now offers two and three bedroom lodges, eco lodges and Lakeside studios with features such as patios, balconies, woodburners and even hot tubs.
Arriving well past dinner time we ordered delicious take away fish and chips from the Terrace Restaurant, which turned up a short time later courtesy of a very chirpy delivery man.
Our puppy meanwhile feasted on the doggy treats our host had left for her. We also found she had been provided with a dog bed, a water bowl and even toilet bags.
Our accommodation was a Tregea detached lodge with sundeck.
Downstairs there was a king size en suite bedroom, plus two double size twin bedrooms and a family-size bathroom.
The children were thrilled by the chocolates which had been left on our pillows.
Upstairs was the kitchen with everything you could possibly need, including a cooker, fridge, microwave, dishwasher and washer dryer.
The kitchen leads into a dining and open plan living area with a TV and DVD player and French doors onto the balcony.
After a good night’s sleep we set off in search of adventure.
While my wife and children went to enjoy an archery session with the lovely instructor Kelly I was lucky enough to enjoy a full body massage in The Wellbeing Spa. Well, someone had to! And in my defence I found I had even more knots for expert masseuse Hannah to unwind than I had first imagined.
The girls meanwhile had a great time at archery and it turned out my talented wife had even landed herself a spot on the leader’s board (she made me write that!).
One of the many unique aspects to a holiday at Landal Gwel an Mor are the wildlife experiences.
Aimed at both children and adults alike, these ranger-guided activities are available all year round at the resort’s wildlife and conservation centre Feadon Farm
Myself and our oldest daughter spent a fascinating few hours enjoying falconry with the hugely knowledgeable and entertaining Gary where we flew the resident Harris Hawk ‘Harry’ and the huge Barn Owl Margaret.
You can also do a night safari to observe badgers and meet the other rescued and tame animals such as the hedgehogs, pigs, goats, snakes, bats, squirrels, donkeys and reindeer.
Another highlight is meeting, feeding and learning about the beautiful and very friendly rescue foxes in their barn.
BaseCamp at Landal Gwel an Mor is a 2000 sq ft indoor play centre and climbing facility and this is where my wife and our youngest daughter headed while we were marvelling at the wildlife.
Featuring a range of indoor Clip’n’Climb walls along with soft play and café, BaseCamp has been created to provide all weather adventures, social fun and fitness for all.
With ten different climbing walls to encounter, the Clip’n’Climb area kept our particularly adventurous 10-year-old engaged for more than an hour and a half – and that is no mean feat.
In addition to the spa, the clubhouse houses the gym, indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna with a children’s play area, tennis courts, putting and croquet positioned in the resort’s grounds close by.
The pool was warm and welcoming with loungers arranged around it and our swim made us all famished so that afternoon we ventured out to nearby St Ives and feasted on mussels and brown crabs.
We came home to watch a DVD borrowed from reception in our comfy lodge.
On Sunday morning we made for the gym and spent an hour on the treadmills, bikes and cross trainers.
Our only criticism of the gym was that it didn’t have air conditioning, so we all pretty much roasted by the time we came out.
A cooling stroll around the resort a little later took us close to The Famous Nine the UK’s largest all weather greens and tees golf course.
The Par 3 course was apparently inspired by the world’s most aspirational golf courses and features holes which pay tribute to those found at St Andrews, Augusta, Royal Troon, Sawgrass, Pebble Beach and Carnoustie.
As part of the golf course development, Clover Lake is the resort’s two-acre coarse fishing lake, stocked with carp and tench, offering a peaceful but challenging fishing experience.
We went for Sunday lunch at The Terrace Restaurant – which was nothing short of fabulous.
The kind and attentive staff team seated us in the conservatory which has sliding doors and spectacular views across the bay.
The puppy even got her own comfy basket, water bowl and doggy treats to enjoy too.
The Terrace offers an informal bistro style venue with a locally sourced menu, as well as the take away service we had already tried on Friday evening.
After delicious starters of whitebait and squid we tucked into the Sunday roast, with crunchy roast potatoes and huge Yorkshire puddings.
The pup also enjoyed a treat with some special doggie ice cream, which smelled strangely of vanilla and fish - but which she clearly loved.
We left Gwel an Mor on Monday morning, refreshed and rested but also having had some great experiences.
The puppy also seemed to have had the time of her life.
This Five will definitely be back!
